On March 4, 1993, Jim Valvano was awarded the inaugural Arthur Ashe Courage and Humanitarian Award at the first annual ESPY Awards. Following are some of my favorite quotes from his acceptance speech.
"To me, there are three things we all should do every day. We should do this every day of our lives. Number one is laugh. You should laugh every day. Number two is think. You should spend some time in thought. Number three is, you should have your emotions moved to tears, could be happiness or joy. But think about it. If you laugh, you think, and you cry, that's a full day. That's a heck of a day. You do that seven days a week, you're going to have something special."
"It's so important to know where you are. I know where I am right now. How do you go from where you are to where you want to be? I think you have to have an enthusiasm for life. You have to have a dream, a goal. You have to be willing to work for it."
"Cancer can take away all my physical abilities. It cannot touch my mind, it cannot touch my heart and it cannot touch my soul. And those three things are going to carry on forever. I thank you and God bless you all."
""Don't give up, don't ever give up."

Darin: God has promised us that He will never burden us with more than we can carry. He has also promised us to be with us 'unitl the end of the earth'.
Rest assured He is with you and there are many, some who do not know you except through those who do, which will be praying for you and encouraging you along this road that you are now traveling. Those of us at a distance can not do more than that and I am sure those close to you will be doing what they can.
Hang tough, run the race which is set before you, and perserve until the race is won.

Darin,
My prayers and throught are with you and your family during this time. Your attitude is better than most people, who have more in life than they would/could ever need. Sometimes it's hard to understand why we must go through trials as this, but God is in control, and He is the Master Physician. I have put your name on the prayer list at my church, and have several people praying for you. I wish you the best, and will talk to you when you get back to work. God Bless.
